The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Sony Corp., this week announced a voluntary recall of Sony’s AC adapters used with Vaio all-in-on PCs as well as Vaio docking stations for notebooks. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately.

Sony said that it had received four reports of adapters short circuiting. No incidents occurred in the United States and no injuries have been reported so far, but the company decided to initiate recall process. Apparently, insulation inside the AC adapter can fail over time, posing an electrical shock hazard to consumers. Consumers should turn off their computer, unplug it and stop using the recalled AC adapters immediately and contact Sony to arrange for a free replacement of the affected AC adapter.

The recalled AC adapter model is the Sony VGP-AC19V17, which was supplied for use with Sony Vaio VGC-LT and VGC-JS2-series of all-in-one personal computers as well as Sony Vaio VGP-PRBX1 and VGP-PRFE1 docking stations.

This is hardly the first recall of AC adapters in the recent years. The good news is that no person has been injured and no computer has been damaged.
