System builders and system buyers looking for lower-cost and lower-power AMD options now have a lot more. The company announced today eight new processors in its Athlon II line, including three-core CPUs and two energy-efficient 45-watt CPUs at every core count, intended for mainstream minitower, small-form-factor, and all-in-one systems.

AMD intends the processors to compete against Intel’s midrange line of CPUs, with the $77, two-core, 2.8-GHz Athlon II X2 240e up against the $119, 2.8-GHz Core 2 Duo E7400 and the $87, three-core, 2.9-GHz Athlon II X3 435 up against the $190, 3.16-GHz Core 2 Duo E8500.

Last month, in response to Intel’s launch of its Lynnfield line of CPUs, AMD announced its Athlon II X4 620, the first sub-$100 four-core CPU, priced at $99 and running at 2.6 GHz, but which had a TDP of 95 watts. The Athlon II X4 630 was made available at the same time, with the same specs except for its 2.8-GHz clock speed; it’s priced at $122.

The complete tally of Athlon II processors released today is as follows:

AMD sent us an Athlon II X3 435 and an Athlon II X2 240e. We’re working on putting them through their paces, and will report the results as soon as we have them.

Here’s a look at the complete specifications of those two CPUs:

Last week, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced Wi-Fi Direct — a peer-to-peer wireless networking method that could replace what we commonly know today as Ad Hoc networking mode.

With Ad Hoc, we can usually share internet connection of one computer to other computers thru the built-in WiFi. One such example is our tutorial here — How to share 3G Internet over WiFi.

The new protocol (Wi-Fi Direct) will allow any device that implements the standard to connect directly to another device to send and receive data. It feels like the standard it gunning at Bluetooth. Imagine being able to share the internet connection of your mobile phone to all other devices via WiFi? You can also transfer files at the same time.

If Bluetooth has a normal transfer rate of about 2Mbps, WiFi Direct could reach 54Mbps or even higher. On top of that, wireless connections can go even further, in the hundreds of meters perhaps. Only drawback could be the amount of power it consumes compared to running Bluetooth.

Following a year of hype mostly centered on the fact that it’s not its predecessor (Vista), Windows 7 has finally been released to the world today, to mostly positive notices. Of course, it’s been available in various forms since about the beginning of the year, but today is the first day you can officially buy it.

I’ve been using Windows 7 for a couple of months now, and although I like a lot of its new features, it’s hardly changed my life. In fact, the overall experience for me has been almost exactly like using Vista—well, after all its compatibility issues were fixed. Depending on how you use your computer, that could be a good thing or a bad thing.

So is moving to Windows 7 immediately worth the trouble—and, more importantly, your money? Here are seven reasons you may want to consider running to your nearest electronics store and slapping down your credit card right away, as well as another six reasons you should stay inside, barricade all the entrances, and hope the lunacy ends before trick-or-treaters start pounding on your doors demanding either your soul or Snickers bars.

PC water-cooling components specialist Danger Den is almost ready with its water-block compatible with AMD’s upcoming dual-GPU accelerator codenamed “Hemlock”. Almost, since the base-plate of the water-block has already been designed and molded, which makes for most of the product in itself, requiring only the top, its sealing, and fittings. The monolithic, full-coverage block base is made of copper. Its top portion reveals its intricately carved water channels. The copper grooves over the areas of the block which make contact with some of the most important components such as the GPU, memory, and bridge chip, increase area of heat dissipation. The block is CrossFire certified, and weighs about 3.00 lbs / 1.37 kg. Danger Den is waiting for an engineering sample from AMD, so it can complete running tests, and name its block after getting clarity on what AMD ends up naming Hemlock. AMD’s new flagship graphics accelerator is expected to arrive in time for the crucial X-Mas shopping season.

How can you miss me when I won’t go away?

Well, well, well. Look what the cat has dragged back to newstechtunnel. Yes, I’m back. In a manner of speaking, anyway. I’m not here as a full-time employee or as Community Manager. I’m here as a columnist and content contributor.

How did this insanity come about?

PCMag.com Editor-in-Chief Lance Ulanoff pinged me a while ago about possibly doing some content sharing, and we got to chatting and ended up cutting a deal with me writing a weekly column for ET. As part of our deal you’ll also see partially cloned Linux reviews appearing here on ET.

I’ve always suspected that Lance might be a bit on the dotty side and this crazy scheme pretty much confirms it. Heh. Just kidding, Lance.

I’m actually happy to have the gig and to be able to write for the ET audience again.

Desktop Linux Reviews

When I left ET, I wanted to keep doing Linux reviews so I set up a new blog called Desktop Linux Reviews and I’ve been writing away ever since. The blog has done pretty well, as my reviews usually end up on Linux Today, Distrowatch, and a lot of other Linux sites. Note that there’s a forum you can drop by, too.

That Linux review content really originated here on ET, and soon you’ll be seeing cloned stories appearing here on ET again with a link back to my blog for the rest of the review. It’s sort of like DLR and ET merging together like a human and some sand trout (more on that at the end of the column).

ET Community Manager No More

When I was working full-time for ET, part of my role as Community Manager was to listen to complaints about the forum and the site in general. That’s no longer my domain though so if you want to bark about ET you should contact Matthew Murray about it as there won’t be much I can do to help you out.

Treasure Trove: My Column Archive

If you’re new to ET and haven’t read any of my earlier stuff then you might want to drop by my column archive. There’s quite a bit of stuff there, and some of it is completely off the wall, so watch out if you decide to wade into it. I can’t be held responsible for how angry my scribblings may make you.

When I left ET, I wrote a few columns and published them on JimLynch.com. Here they are for your reading enjoyment:

While there are a lot of HD media players out there, I think there’s still room for more. So when I got a review unit of the BriteView-CinemaTube HD Media Player, I thought WD TV has some pretty nifty competition up ahead.

The CinemaTube does not have an internal storage so you need to hook it up with an external HDD. While this is a cheaper configuration, you still need to buy your own HDD with an enclosure. That means you’ll also need two power cables to hook both the player and the external drive.

The media player’s enclosure is made of up of plastic. Nothing really wrong with since it feels very light but it also gives an impression of a cheap construction (even the painted logo of BriteView-CinemaTube is a little off).

It’s compatible with all hard disk format windows(NTFS), Linux (EXT2/3), and MAC (HFS). The player supports a large number of video formats — MPEG1/2/4 (M1V, M2V, M4V), MPEG1/2 PS (M2P, MPG), AVI, ASF, WMV, MKV, H.264.

CinemaTube supports multiple audio output formats, including MPEG I Layer 1,2,3(2-CH), MPEG II Layer 1,2 (Multi-Channel), LPCM, ADPCM, FLAC, AAC, WAV, WMA and OGG, RA, Dolby Digital AC3 and DTS. DTS (downmix) is supported by CinemaTube so you do not need additional DTS receivers to enjoy HD videos with DTS tracks.

Unlike the DW TV, the CinemaTube is also a torrent downloader (the built-in torrent engine does all the downloading without the need of a PC). The LAN port at the back is the primary connection to hook it up to the internet but I think you can also use a WiFi dongle on one of the USB ports to get it on wireless. The only approved and dedicated WiFi adapter is the WL-6200C which is sold separately.

At the back panel, you get a conservative number of ports — 1 HDMI, 2 SUB 2.0, Ethernet, AV and SPDIF. The UI and navigation of the CinemaTube is pretty simple, straightforward and easy to understand.

Most useful is the preview panel/screen that allows you to view a short clip of video you are browsing before playing them (no need to guess what the video file is).

Although I have not tried it, the device can also do UPnP Streaming so you can watch CNN, ESPN, CBS and Hulu via 3rd-party applications like PlayOn and TVersity.

The CinemaTube will retail for Php6,350 when it comes out in November. You can check out www.digilivingph.com for more info abut the product.

Looks like a reasonable criteria which means you need to be a bit popular among social media sites to qualify (I wonder why they didn’t include Friendster). If you asked me, the hardest number to achieve is LinkedIn.
